In 1982 the Royal College of Psychiatrists recommended that certain guidelines be followed in all cases of child & adolescent self-harm. This paper examines to what extent these guidelines are being incorporated into child & adolescent self-harm policies in the West Midlands region. It finds that many services fail to meet all the guidelines, & highlights the need for practice evaluation, with special emphasis on how services are received as well as provided. (8 refs)
