The main findings of an international symposium that evaluated current knowledge of the epidemiology, psychobiology, & effects of medical treatment on suicidal behavior are presented here: 1) to improve public & professional awareness of risk factors for suicide, 2) to enhance earlier access to appropriate clinical assessment & treatments for affective & psychotic disorders, & 3) encourage & support research to clarify specific benefits & risks of medical treatments & interventions aimed at preventing suicide.
