This article discusses suicide prevention in the United States. A description is included of the national three-pronged strategy for suicide prevention, concentrating on awareness, intervention, & methodology. A summary of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s suicide research agenda is presented. It is noted that an increased understanding of suicide is necessary to implement an effective public health approach to prevention. (5 refs) (SC)
