This study analyzed a 37-year historical series of hospitalized patients in Brazil who had ingested caustic substances to assess the effectiveness of the therapy administered during this period. Data was collected from 239 patients from 1957 to 1994. 57% were women & suicidal intent was indicated in 60% of the cases. The authors conclude that treatment with a corticosteroid, an antibiotic, & a high-protein/hypercaloric diet seemed to be beneficial for patients who ingest small or medium amounts of caustic soda.
