The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between self-reported unhappiness & suicide. Self-reported unhappiness was found to be strongly associated with subsequent suicide in a long follow-up, as risk of suicide increased with decreasing happiness. Moreover, it was also found to be indicative of cumulative health hazards. The findings & their implications are discussed. (30 refs)
