This editorial discusses the article by Dr. Quill in which he described how he assisted a patient with suicide. The editor criticizes the action of his colleague, asserting that at all times the health care professional should will the continued life of patients. He argues that competent patients should retain the right to refuse treatment, however, the physician’s role should remain to promote healing & relieve suffering. (2 refs) (SC)
