Suicide Attempts in Major Affective Disorder Patients With Comorbid Substance use Disorders

This literature review evaluates the association between substance abuse & risk for suicide. In addition to a review of previous research, data on 504 Italian suicide attempters with mood disorders is scrutinized. The study supports general conclusions in the literature. Mainly depressive or dysphoric mood disorders may increase risk for suicide. Differences in risks of substance abuse & suicidal behavior in men & in bipolar I patients suggests that substance abuse & mood disorders may contribute to suicidal risk with at least partial independence or additivity.
