This letter from the editor is a response to a study by Jenkins et al who reported on continuing suicide risk after deliberate self-harming behaviors are exhibited in patients. The editor presents another study of 8,304 people discharged over a 13 year period from Scottish general hospitals after deliberate self-harm. Results indicate that there is a high suicide rate in this population as well as high rates of death arising from other illnesses.
