The Suicidal Syndrome: Relationship to Clinical Entities (IN: Psychopathology of Depression: Proceedings, ed. by K Achte, V Aalberg, & J Lonnqvist)

This article analyzed the relationship between clinical disorders (such as major depressive disorder & alcoholism) & suicidality. 4,125 patients admitted to a mid-Western American psychiatric inmpatient hospital unit were scrutinized. 608 had suicidal thoughts & 208 had suicidal plans. Primary psychiatric depression was found only in older suicide attempters. Intent & lethality of suicidal behavior fluctuated with age. Previous research regarding these relationships are discussed.
