This article examines the risks of self-harm & suicide, & the importance of family in mental health outcomes for same-sex attracted youth. Those who are open about their sexuality frequently experience abuse & rejection by family & friends. This article discusses how rejection can create feelings of insecurity that can lead to self-harming behavior. It also examines how families can struggle with prejudice & discrimination, & how families may not always be equipped to support a person questioning their sexuality. The article concludes with prevention strategies & information that families can use to deal with problems that arise. (37 refs.) (AK)
