In a discussion that examines the cause & phases of pathological gambling, the sociocultural roots of gambling are portrayed as distinct from gambling itself. The literature is reviewed, & different types of pathological gamblers are examined. Three phases of the career of the pathological gambler are outlined: the winning phase; the losing phase; & the desperation phase. Two major sources of help for gamblers suffering depression are examined & their benefits & disadvantages are discussed. Finally, projections about future sources of impact on the image of the pathological gambler are made.
