The present study was designed to explore whether the time-series suicide rate in Mexico was associated with measures of domestic social integration (marriage, divorce, & birth rates) in the way that Durkheim’s theory would predict. Official suicide rates in Mexico during the period 1950-1985 were positively & significantly associated with the birth rate, positively with divorce rates, & negatively with marriage rates. These associations were inconsistent with predictions based on Durkheim’s theory. (5 refs.)
