To examine the prevalence of adolescents’ vegetarianism in a multiethnic, urban population, & its correlates with demographic, personal, weight-related, & behavioural factors. Teenage vegetarians comprise about 6% of the sample. Adolescent vegetarians, particularly males, are at greater risk than others for involvement in unhealthy & extreme weight control behaviours. They more often reported having been told by a physician that they had a eating disorder & were more likely to have contemplated & attempted suicide. Vegetarianism among adolescents may be a signal for preventative intervention. (39 refs)
