Training & supporting survivors who are ready to help the newly bereaved can provide two vital components in an active model of postvention. First, the opportunity to address survivor pain & confusion as close to the death as possible allows the emotional healing & cognitive restoration to begin right away. The second component is the simultaneous instillation of hope from the paraprofessional survivor-caregivers present. This model has been shown to increase referrals to bereavement services, shorten the time between death & assessment for treatment, & provide additional healing benefits to the paraprofessional survivors providing the postvention service.
