This chapter discusses the experience of loss in the circumstances of urban poverty. The grief experiences of children, young adults, & grandmothers (many of whom are raising a second set of children) are explored. Obstacles to dying & grieving are discussed using the case example of a 59-year-old woman with cancer. Even though there are many difficulties, there are also strengths in inner-city communities which provide support in the experience of coping with death & restorative work of bereavement. Implications for caregivers are reviewed.
