259 adolescents, age 10-20 years, residing in South Carolina group homes were interviewed about symptoms of depression & characteristics including demographics, personal history, family dynamics, academic performance, & social network. 74.5% had clinical depression as defined by the total score on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. 43 of the depressed subjects responded yes to the question, “ever try to commit suicide” versus 24 of the nondepressed subjects. Careful screening of all adolescents in group homes for suicide attempts is indicated, especially among females. (45 refs.)
