Data on mortality were collected as part of a longitudinal study of anorexia nervosa & bulimia nervosa, now in its 11th year. 7 deaths occurred during the study, all among anorexic subjects with a history of binging & purging, & with comorbid Axis 1 disorders. The standardized mortality ratios for death & suicide were significantly elevated. Features correlated with fatal outcome are longer duration of illness, binging & purging, comorbid substance abuse, & comorbid affective disorders. (21 refs.)
