There is a common myth on American college campuses that if a student’s roommate completes suicide, the student will receive a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA) for that semester. This chapter explores this myth & reports the results of 2 small convenience sample surveys at 2 colleges in 1985. The majority of students at both colleges reported either hearing of or reading about this myth. It seems the myth is diffused through student oral culture. (7 notes)
