This presentation discussed a study of the rate & nature of fatal & serious non-fatal self-inflicted injuries that occurred between January 1992-June 1998 in Victoria, Australia. Results showed an increase in the rate of suicide & self-destructive behaviours. Those who completed suicide & those who had self-inflicted injuries were significantly different in terms of methods used, average age, frequency of each gender, & residential location. More research is needed to understand why rates have risen.
