Future Perspectives (IN: The International Handbook of Suicide and Attempted Suicide, edited by K Hawton & K van Heeringen)

This chapter considers future areas for research in suicidology including how knowledge of causes of suicidal behaviour might be advanced & the importance of comorbidity in suicide & attempted suicide. Needed developments with regard to the treatment of suicide attempters & other people at risk are highlighted. A plea is made for the improved care of those bereaved by suicide. Finally, key aspects of prevention programmes, particularly the importance of integration of population-based strategies with strategies targeted towards high-risk groups, are examined. (17 refs.)
