In the first part of this chapter an overview is provided of reports of suicide in various psychiatric hospitals worldwide, specifically the apparent increase in inpatient suicides which has been observed during the last three or four decades. In the second part of the chapter the characteristics of inpatient suicides are reviewed & recommendations made for suicide prevention according to different diagnostic groups. (50 refs.)
