This chapter describes & examines empirical evidence concerning the relationship between suicidal behaviour & the labour market, based on a systematic & structured review of the literature from 1984 onwards. Three aspects of the labour market are distinguished, unemployment, female labour force participation, & occupational status & occupational risk. Suicidal behaviour & deliberate self-harm are considered separately. The main findings are presented in tabular form with a brief accompanying commentary. The chapter concludes with a brief consideration of the implications for prevention. (124 refs.)
