This study examined the practices of federally funded clinical investigators in obtaining informed consent from alcohol & drug abusers in the United States. Almost all investigators had policies concerning confidentiality disclaimers for research participants when information about attempted suicide, threats of homicide, or reports of child abuse was reported. Less than half of the investigators informed participants of these limits to confidentiality. Guidelines for informed consent with substance abusers are suggested. (18 refs) (SC)
