This article examined the mental health services available to American Indians in 1988. Available psychological service providers, utilization of psychological services & the delivery of services are discussed. Assumptions that American Indians hold about psychology & assumptions that psychology holds about American Indians are described. Recommendations are made for policy & action, including recruitment, education & training, & political-organizational involvement. (105 refs.)
