This study contrasts self-reported symptomatology on the MCMI-III in a sample of 97 psychiatric patients admitted directly to inpatient care with a sample of 74 patients admitted directly to day hospital treatment. Effect sizes of the degrees of change from admission to retesting were calculated; there were no subscale differences between groups at either test time. A test item dealing with suicidal ideation did differentiate between the groups; inpatients expressed more ideation at admission.
