Guze & Robins (1970) reviewed 17 published studies on the course & outcome of patients with depressive disorders. This chapter summarizes their review & critically examines the original tabulations. The authors then summarize American epidemiological trends for depression & suicide over the 20th century, & all recent long-term follow-up mortality studies of patients with major depressive disorder published in English or German between 1970-1998.
