Post-partum psychiatric admissions in Denmark looked at the birth and causes of death for 1973-1993. During the study period 1,567 women were admitted to psychiatric hospitals of whom 107 (6.7%) died. Suicides and deaths from all unnatural causes were most likely to occur in the first year after childbirth, when the risk of suicide is increased 70 fold.
