The issue discussed in this column is how parents can ensure that their children understand how dangerous firearms can be. With respect to suicide, the answer discusses 2 problems that may increase adolescent risk: impulsivity & intense mood swings which may suddenly make life seem not worthwhile. This last situation can be dangerous if a loaded firearm is readily available. Parents are reminded that firearms in the home are most often used in suicides & not crime prevention.
