A study of 64 Louisiana parishes indicated that the per capita spending on lotteries (but not on video poker) & the unemployment rate were associated with changes in the suicide rate from 1989-90 to 1994-95. Parishes with higher rates of unemployment & more per capita spending on the lottery had a greater increase in the suicide rate over this period. (16 refs.)
