This article describes the Defeat Depression campaign, whose objectives were to enhance knowledge of depression within the general public in the UK, & for the medical profession to create consensus statements on the recognition/treatment of depression. The campaign’s activities included: consensus conferences, a video package (1994) offering training on counseling depressed in general practice, & the education of the public through the media. Ways of evaluating the campaign are suggested.
