Underlying causes of death were examined in a register series of Danish patients with multiple sclerosis. 6068 cases of patients who had died between 1951-93 were included. Accidents or suicide accounted for 3.8% of deaths. The greatest number of deaths due to these causes occurred among 40-59-year-olds, but the highest percentage of suicidal & accidental deaths occurred in people 0-39 years. An increased risk of death from these causes can be indirectly attributed to multiple sclerosis.
