This study explores whether the percentage change in the gross domestic product spent for social security from 1960 to 1982 was associated with changes in suicide rates in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, & the USA. Welfare spending & suicide rates were not found to be associated in this sample of nations. (2 refs.)
