Psychiatric intervention after attempted suicide has 4 main goals: evaluating for further suicidality, diagnosing possible psychiatric illness, crisis intervention & post-discharge aftercare. This paper evaluates different aftercare strategies on these goals. Several studies on this topic are discussed. Psychotherapy & psychopharmacological approaches and their effectiveness are detailed. Further emphasis on reducing non-compliance in outpatient aftercare is suggested. (31 refs.)
