The author, a British Columbian police officer, discusses firearm suicides precipitated by arrival of police. The idea that the suicide is triggered by the arrival of police because the victim views suicide as less painful than incarceration is suggested. Two examples of firearms suicide which took place when the victim was fleeing from police in a car chase are given. The author suggests that firearm suicides should be considered by police when engaging in motor vehicle pursuit. (14 refs.)
