This paper examines whether links between psychiatric services & family physicians can be strengthened & additional support provided for family physicians if a psychiatrist is available by phone to respond to clinical calls from family physicians. A psychiatrist, who visited 18 physicians in 5 practices, provided telephone back-up. All calls were documented & analyzed at the end of a 12-month period. It is concluded that the service appears to be a cost-efficient & effective intervention.
