The proportion of people with a disorder who sought help & what categories of professional help were sought were studied in a 2-stage interview of adults in Edmonton. Of 1964 subjects reinterviewed, 570 met criteria for a DIS/DSM-III diagnosis in the year preceding the interview. For those with a diagnosis, female gender & age (under 45) were significant predictors of help-seeking. Comorbidity was also highly significant. Just over 28% of those with a diagnosis saw any health care professional.
