Past work on occupational groups has found higher suicide rates among manual workers than nonmanual workers. It is not clear if this is due to occupational strains or the covariates of manual worker status, e.g. gender & marital strain. This study explores suicide risk among carpenters. Once controls are introduced, carpenters are only 1.15 times more at risk of suicide than the working population. The risk of suicide in working class occupations may be due to covariates of these occupations.
