Individuals with schizophrenia are at increased risk for attempted & completed suicide. Management requires a multi-dimensional assessment of the individual’s biopsychosocial functioning & resources. Treatment of co-morbid symptoms & syndroms such as psychosis, depression & substance abuse reduces the risk for suicidal behaviour. Interventions described include hospitalization, outpatient crisis programs, & family treatment. (101 refs.)
