The epidemiology of completed & attempted suicide is presented. Known risk factors for suicide are discussed within a framework designed to encourage a systematic approach to theory testing & prevention. In combination with proximal risk factors such as access to lethal means, recent & stressful life events, & intoxication, they can form the necessary & sufficient conditions for suicide. (125 refs.)
