Studies investigating psychosocial/behavioral treatments for reducing suicidal/parasuicidal behavior are reviewed. Definitional difficulties in the field are given. There is discussion on treating suicidal behavior directly/indirectly. The effectiveness of psychosocial/pharmacotherapy treatments are compared. Indirect treatment is not effective. Behavioral intervention is promising for high-risk parasuicidal individuals. Treatment of suicide in the clinical research community is poor. (57 refs.)
