In this study, researchers examined how early social deprivation & neurobiological changes contributed to self-injurious behavior (SIB) in monkeys. Studies indicating that environmental causes of SIB & aggression are not directly related to the production of 5-HT, and inversely, that low levels of 5-HT does not promote SIB, are reviewed. Where possible, these results are discussed in relation to human primates (74 refs.)
