Protecting Adolescents From Harm: Findings From the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health

Risk & protective factors were studied at family, school & invididual levels as related to 4 areas of adolescent health & morbidity (emotional health, violence, substance use & sexuality). 12,188 adolescents in Grades 7-12 completed a 90-minute interview. 87.4% of respondents (10010/11453) had neither thought of nor attempted suicide in the past year. 3.6% of all subjects reported suicide attempts. 3.6% also reported a parental suicide attempt in the past year & 0.9% reported a parent’s suicide.
