During the 1990s, Aotearoa/New Zealand has experienced an alarming increase in youth suicide. New Zealand has also undergone a period of social & economic changes that have created dramatic social & cultural shifts. This article focuses on these changes & the effect they have had on cultural narratives of gender & suicidal behaviour, the different cultural etiologies that underlie the statistics, & recommendations for intervention & prevention program development.
