The records of all people presenting to Edmonton emergency rooms for a parasuicide were collected from February 1993-February 1994. 1970 Edmonton residents were seen for 2436 suicide attempts. Women accounted for 60.7% of cases. 15-19-year-olds had the highest rates with rates being higher among females. Higher rates were seen among single, divorced or separated patients. An overdose of medication was the most common method. Findings are compared to those from other countries. (22 refs.)
