This study aimed to define the characteristics & assess the clinical predictability & possible prevention of psychiatric in-patient suicides. The coroner’s files on all suicides in the Greater Montreal Region from April 1986-March 1991 were examined. 104 cases involved hospital in-patients. Nearly half of these occurred outside of the hospital setting. Suicides were significantly more predictable in general hospital psychiatric wards. Prevention measures did not differ greatly across settings.
