This presentation reported efforts in the USA to develop a commonly defined set of terms for use in suicide research. The benefits of a standard nomenclature were discussed. If the proposed definitions are accepted, the next stage would be to develop standard operational means of applying them in clinical, research & public health domains. A third stage would be the dissemination of this terminology & the encouragement of its use.
