Isacsson discussed a series of studies on the effects of antidepressant medication on the suicide rate & the risk of suicide in depressed patients. Although a decrease in the Swedish suicide rate was seen from 1991-1994, a period coinciding with the increased use of antidepressants, a causal relationship is not claimed. However, strong evidence exists to support the increased detection of depression & treatment with antidepressant medications as basic suicide prevention strategies.
