The Prevalence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in an Adolescent Inpatient Unit

A 2-year retrospective chart study was conducted to examine the prevalence & comorbidity of posttraumatic stress disorder in an adolescent inpatient population. 187 patient records from 1993 & 1994 were reviewed. 42% of subjects had a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder. In a group of 12 patients who had attempted suicide, 5 had comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder. Posttraumatic stress disorder was found to have a high comorbidity with depression, anxiety & a history of abuse.
