A review of anthropological, sociological & psychological theories of suicidal behaviour indicates that a disruption in social relationships & a breakdown in community networks increases the risk of suicide. Current suicide prevention tactics fail to address these problems. Suggestion are made for tactics that would focus on the underlying causes of suicide, consistent with a communitarian philosophy & tactics that could guide efforts into the 21st century. (30 refs.)
