Crisis workers may be in a strategic position to screen large populations of people in crisis and to reduce the number of suicidal deaths by identifying those likely to be struggling with a diagnosis of major depression, substance abuse/dependence, schizophrenia & conduct disorder. As part of their basic training, all volunteer crisis workers should be required to demonstrate basic knowledge about major psychopathology & some basic level of expertise in the application of diagnostic criteria.
